Testimonial di Kiran Seef (Summer 2024, Solisti Aquilani)
Working with I Solisti Aquilani opened my eyes to the importance of cultural institutions in affecting social change. In 2009, L’Aquila suffered an earthquake that brutalized the city and displaced tens of thousands of its inhabitants. While reconstruction initiatives partially mitigated the damage in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, such efforts slowed, and much of the city is still under restoration as a result. Using their influence in L’Aquila’s cultural sphere, I Solisti Aquilani raise awareness through music of the damage dealt to L’Aquila and neighboring communes from the earthquakes. They are outspoken advocates against climate change, dedicating many of their recent performances to confronting the new environment that rising temperatures and pollution have left in their wake. Taking part in these efforts was extremely rewarding. Although my contributions were short-lived, it was my honor to participate in bringing about meaningful change through music and culture. I left L’Aquila having made new friendships, speaking more fluent Italian, and hoping to return again soon.
