ITAL-2034 Italian Translation
Course Description
This course is designed to introduce advanced students of Italian to the theory and practice of translation Students learn to translate texts (Italian to English and English to Italian) from a variety of topics and genres. By learning fundamental theoretical concepts and techniques of translation, in this course students also gain practical experience in reading, paraphrasing, summarizing, editing and proofreading. They also learn the criteria for evaluating translations. In addition, students learn how to research terminology as well as resolve lexical, stylistic and cultural problems that may arise. Therefore, they become aware of linguistic and cultural differences in subject-related areas. The texts used in Italian Translation come from authentic sources and cover a variety of genres, including newspapers, commercials, cartoons, songs, movie subtitles and literature sources. During this course, Italian grammar rules are reviewed to master linguistically complex structures and enhance language competence. Requirement: Intensive Advanced Italian II and Writing and Culture. Credits: 3 Prerequisites: ITAL-233
