Students who complete a minor in Italian reach a level of proficiency corresponding approximately to the profile defined in the ACTFL guidelines as Advanced-mid.
Expectations
They are expected:
- to be able to communicate with native speakers and use the language both orally and in written form in everyday situations and in some formal situations on topics ranging from personal experience to academic topics such as literature;
- to understand the main ideas expressed in a variety of textual genres and the main pragmatic elements that characterize communication in those genres;
- to acquire some sense of sociolinguistic differences in Italy (such as regional accents and different registers);
- to transcend simple feelings and impressionistic individual reactions to a text;
- to develop sensitivity to the role of form (its politics and ideology) in each individual text and its evolution;
- to be able to enroll in a university program in Italy.
