Testimonials
Working with I Solisti Aquilani opened my eyes to the importance of cultural institutions in affecting social change. In 2009, L’Aquila suffered an earthquake that brutalized the city and displaced tens of thousands of its inhabitants. While reconstruction initiatives partially mitigated the damage in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, such efforts slowed, and much of the city is still under restoration as a result. Using their influence in L’Aquila’s cultural sphere, I Solisti Aquilani raise awareness through music of the damage dealt to L’Aquila and neighboring communes from the earthquakes. They are outspoken advocates against climate change, dedicating many of their recent performances to confronting the new environment that rising temperatures and pollution have left in their wake. Taking part in these efforts was extremely rewarding. Although my contributions were short-lived, it was my honor to participate in bringing about meaningful change through music and culture. I left L’Aquila having made new friendships, speaking more fluent Italian, and hoping to return again soon.

Having the opportunity to work for I Solisti Aquilani and live in L’Aquila, Italy for a month greatly improved my Italian language skills and also gave me the chance to immerse myself fully in Italian culture. There is no better way to gain more appreciation and understanding for a country than to live there. This internship was the best way to do so while also gaining work experience in a completely new professional environment. I Solisti Aquilani is an incredible organization that improves the community and brings art to an area that was devastated by an earthquake in 2009. The people there were welcoming and super supportive during my time there and even brought me with them for a few concerts outside of the town. I am so glad I took a chance on this internship and can’t wait to go back and visit!
