When I first showed up to Georgetown, I knew that I would have to attain proficiency in
a foreign language to graduate. I was fairly nervous, because I knew that I was going to start
something new. On a whim—no more than a thought that “I love Italy and want to be able to
speak Italian” I decided to start with beginner Italian and enrolled in what would become my
favorite program at Georgetown.
I cannot speak highly enough of my experience in the Italian Department. Little did I
know that the friends that I made in class at the beginning of my freshman year, when we were
just learning how to introduce ourselves to each other, would become some of my closest friends in classes over the course of my four years at Georgetown. Whether it ended up with us taking a class trip to the Italian Embassy (highly recommend), sitting with some of my friends from class in large lecture halls, or having tiramisu that Professor Melucci made us for having passed our proficiency exams, the Italian department did an excellent job of fostering a community throughout its course offerings.
If I were a freshman, who was about to embark on four years at Georgetown, knowing
what I know now, I would absolutely take all of the Italian classes that I took, and would try to
have taken more. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
